Save Your Vision at Home, Work, School and Play

February 27, 2018

Eye care is always important. At any age you can practice eye safety and take easy steps for saving your vision. So every March, we celebrate Save Your Vision Month in Tucson, Arizona and across the country. Between home, work, school and play, remember these practices for healthy eyes and strong vision.

Save Your Vision at Home

At the end of the day your eyes get tired. Home is where you sleep and rest. Since March is also Sleep Awareness Month, save your vision at home by allowing your eyes to rest and get plenty of sleep. If you wear contacts, always take your lenses out before bed. Sleeping with your contacts causes dry eyes, eye infections and poor sleep. The germs caught in your contacts will stay in your eyes if you sleep with these lenses.

You’re also at risk for more eye infections when you shower while wearing your contact lenses. Keep your lenses clean with contact solution and always wash your hands before touching your eyes. These are simple ways to save your vision while at home.

Save Your Vision at Work

Another thing to remember is that March happens to be Workplace Eye Wellness Month. In addition to saving your vision at home, save your vision at work. An eye injury can come in several different ways no matter your profession or workplace. Depending on your career, take the proper measures for protecting your eyes.

For example, if you work in an industrial environment, you may have numerous forms of protective eyewear. There are polarized sunglasses, visors, face masks and much more. If you work indoors, or in an office, you will also need a certain level of protection. Blue light is all around us, but even more when staring at digital screens. Many workplace environments use digital screens on a daily basis. If you work with computers, try a pair of glasses with special blue light defense.

Save Your Vision at School

Start caring for your eyes at a young age and encourage your children to practice healthy eye care habits. It’s important to go in for an eye exam once a year, but especially for younger patients. Children need their vision to be at its best so they can absorb as much knowledge as they can from their teachers, coaches and other instructors. Poor vision may cause your child to miss out on valuable lesson plans and other opportunities.

If your child has trouble seeing during school, visit your optometrist for help. Your child may need glasses or, in some cases, there could be another issue hurting their eyesight.

Save Your Vision at Play

If you’re at home, work or school, you can always care for your eyes and vision. The same goes for when you are being active or playing sports. Sharp vision gives athletes additional help when on the field, track or court. To keep your vision at its peak performance, wear polarized sunglasses when spending time outside. There are special glasses and eyewear athletes can wear even in the most physical sports like football or hockey.

When heading to the gym or practice, pack a bag will anything you will need during your workout. If you wear contacts, always carry contact solution with you. Also consider wearing a visor or headband to keep sweat out of your eyes. Simple accessories and eyewear have a large impact on your vision and eye health.
