How to Care for Your Eyes During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Daily life has changed because of COVID-19. This type of coronavirus has a different effect on each individual. Since this virus is highly contagious, it’s important to stay safe and healthy. Spreading germs is so simple, but there are many ways to prevent contagion. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. This can be difficult, especially when you wear contact lenses. Let’s review the best ways to care for your eyes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spreading Germs Through Contacts

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) are the top sources for COVID-19 news. Both these groups advise against touching your eyes, nose and mouth. This keeps the virus from entering the body. This request is more difficult when you wear contacts every day.

Whether you wear one-time-use contacts or monthly lenses, you are touching your eyes. Before inserting or removing your contacts, wash your hands. Substances on your fingertips may enter the eyes when touching your contacts. Lenses may carry dirt, dust, germs and other types of residue. This residue causes discomfort and eye irritation. However, symptoms of COVID-19 do not show immediately in most patients.

Glasses for Protection and Convenience

Even if you do not wear contacts, continue to wash your hands. Another recommendation for those who wear contact lenses is to wear your glasses instead. To some, glasses are more convenient than contacts. Don’t worry about dry eyes, contact solution or the extra step of putting in and taking out your lenses.

Glasses are also an extra layer of protection. Eyewear helps us see, but the glasses themselves cover our eyes. This guard blocks our eyes from contagions. The small particles we see on our lenses are what could be entering our eyes. Think about wearing your glasses during this time for convenience and protection.
